This is the list of brands that come to one’s mind when value for money in tech is mentioned. Poco should earn it a seat towards the very top. The budget wing of Xiaomi offers great value for most of its smartphones. Being budget pieces, Poco always tries to strike a chord, often coming up with features and design specs usually reserved for devices costing several times more.
Launched at £309, the Poco X7 Pro is the newest addition, sporting a flat screen with sides quite reminiscent of popular Apple flagship models but at a fraction of the price. Its new MediaTek processor and optical image stabilization camera along with the brilliant OLED display are now set to rewrite the standing for budget smartphones. Then again, there is the even more economical Poco X7, starting from £249, presenting another set of explorations into another design and configuration.

Design and Build
Many Chinese smartphone brands have initially developed their devices for the domestic audience and rebranded them for international markets, and Poco is no other. The Poco X7 Pro happens to be the China-only Redmi Turbo 4, given a distinctive look-or should I say, wrapped in vegan leather, considering the material utilized on the back of my review unit.
To be fair, I find poco’s two-tone and textured styles to be much more aesthetically pleasing than the Redmi’s plain glass back (though I’ve only seen that in images). The gold and black color scheme clearly denotes the X7 Pro as Poco’s even before you can see the small logo in the corner-the faux leather back even withstood fingerprints in my tests. It has a smooth flat frame made of plastic that’s black, though it doesn’t feel that cheap.

Poco x7 Pro Software experience
The Poco X7 Pro has Poco branding but runs on Xiaomi’s HyperOS skin. This skin is very similar to the Xiaomi 14T Pro I reviewed in 2024. It has many iOS-like features, such as separate menus for notifications and quick settings.
During setup, you can choose to have an app drawer. But it’s not on by default. You’ll also find lots of Xiaomi’s own apps.
When I first used the phone, I found it had a lot of shortcuts. There were over ten bloatware apps. But, they didn’t take up much space, and you can easily delete them.
Some apps try to sell you themes and other things too much. But, you can remove them if you don’t like them.
The Poco X7 Pro has AI features, even though it’s a budget phone. It comes with Xiaomi’s AI note-taking and voice recorder apps. Gemini is the default voice assistant, and the gallery app has AI editing tools.
But, there’s no promise of software updates from Poco. It might get the same two major Android updates as its predecessors. This is less than what many other budget phones offer, with some getting updates for five or seven years.

The Poco X7 Pro’s rear cameras have both good and bad points. The main lens has a 50MP Sony sensor with a wide f/1.5 aperture and optical image stabilization. This makes it stand out in the camera world.
The ultrawide lens, however, is an 8MP camera with a f/2.2 aperture. It struggles in different lighting, showing less range and softer images. It’s good for capturing more of your scene but lacks macro capabilities.
The main camera, on the other hand, does well in all lighting. It has better dynamic range and HDR processing. It keeps details sharp when zoomed in and colors vibrant. The Motion Capture feature helps with moving subjects, and the 2x zoom works well.
The Poco X7 also has a 2MP macro lens, but it’s not very useful. It seems to be more about having more lenses than quality.
For nighttime shots, avoid zooming and keep your hand steady. The Poco X7 Pro can capture light well but loses details quickly. The Google Pixel 8a still has the best camera under £500, but the Poco X7 Pro is catching up.

Performance & battery life
This is my first time using a phone with the Dimensity 8400 Ultra chipset. It’s a joint effort between MediaTek and Xiaomi, similar to how Qualcomm works with Samsung. The eight-core chip performs well, almost matching the latest flagship devices in benchmark scores.
In Geekbench tests, I got scores of 1650 for single-core and 6529 for multi-core. This shows MediaTek is making progress, beating other processors in multi-threaded tasks. It’s clear this phone can keep up with last year’s mid-range devices.
Using the phone every day was easy, thanks to its 12GB of RAM. Apps opened fast, and it was quick to respond to my actions. I noticed HyperOS puts apps into deep sleep more often, but they quickly wake up again.

Poco x7 Pro Screen & sound: flat’s magic
I think for very sure- that Poco is taking components from Xiaomi; the display setup of which is almost identical to the Xiaomi 14T Pro. It’s of 6.67″ size and with a resolution better than Full HD. To me, that’s a good enough specification that gives an OLED screen with an adaptive refresh rate of 120Hz, and robustly clear visuals with smooth scrolling.
Gorilla Glass 7i is a price boost because it offers resistance against most scratches and scrapes. I don’t see any long-lasting marks, at least during my testing, although the pre-installed screen protector helps that a lot.
It may not compete on peak brightness levels, peaking at 3200 nits versus 4000 nits for the 14T Pro; the numbers on their own do not always translate to in-the-field performance. Based on my testing, it was bright enough to use comfortably outdoors, even with the brief moments of sunshine we have during winter. The Poco X7 has a peak brightness of 3000 nits but performs generally more like the Pro.
I found the Poco’s display appeared to be less vivid than many recent OLED screens. While the colors popped; they lacked some punch. You can opt for Vivid in the settings to enhance the colors for those who desired slightly more saturation. Such customization is quite commendable at this price point; with a little tweaking, you should be more than happy with the image quality. The performance upholds itself to the same level as that of rival devices within that range.
I’m glad that Poco has focused on audio quality. The stereo speakers on this device offer impressive volume without sounding too shrill at higher extremes. Sometimes, with one speaker outshining the earpiece tweeter, the stereo effect is somewhat imbalanced, though still enough for casual listening; you won’t have to reach for headphones just to enjoy a podcast or a YouTube clip.

Poco X7 Series: What’s Up?
The POCO X7 series is a successor to the popular POCO X6 and X6 Pro models, which come to fill the midrange smartphone sector in India. The major difference comes in the design of both the POCO X7 and the X7 Pro: A kind of a dual-tone finish is used on both, as well as a completely new setup of cameras differing between the two.
Also, the display has been improved over these two fronts with higher peak brightness, which should boost their overall ruggedness. The X7 series also has faster chips, larger battery capacity, and faster charging capabilities. In short, all the features that make the POCO X7 series impressive fit within several advancements made in comparison with its predecessor, the X6 series. Poco x7 pro iron man edition,
